Swansea school pupils learn about careers in construction

Careers in construction were the lesson of the day when St. Modwen Homes visited Sketty Primary School in Swansea.

Around 200 pupils were given a special assembly by the company which is delivering new homes at the nearby Hendrefoilan Park development. The visit was led by assistant site manager Joseph Davies, who was joined by Considerate Constructors mascot Honor Goodsite.

The children learnt about the different roles people play in the construction of a new development – ranging from planning, design and building to sales and marketing. A few of them were also invited to dress up in some of the protective equipment worn on-site to help staff stay safe.

Beverley Phillips, Headteacher at Sketty Primary School, said:

“The children loved meeting Honor and the staff from Hendrefoilan Park and while the visit was fun and interactive, it had important and educational messages behind it as well.

“Hopefully the children will be inspired to follow one of the many careers available in the industry, and remember about the dangers of being close to a construction site.”

Joseph Davies added:

“As a housebuilder, it’s vital that we that we engage with the communities in which we build. One of our priorities is to encourage young people to follow a career in the construction industry, where there is a skills shortage. There are roles available for everybody no matter their skill set. School assemblies are also a great way of highlighting the dangers of construction sites.”

St. Modwen Homes voluntarily abides by the Considerate Constructors Scheme, which is designed to encourage best practice at construction sites to keep staff and visitors to the development safe, limit the impact of construction on the environment and respect the local community.
