Historic diversion of the River Trent is now complete

St. Modwen Homes is proud to announce the completion of a brand new river channel, which has forever changed the course of the River Trent in Stoke.

Running alongside the award-winning Victoria Park housing development, this former brown-field site used to be known as one of the worst parts of the River Trent. After two years of major diversion works, the flow of the river has been improved so greatly that a variety of fish and animals will benefit from ease of access and enhanced habitats.

Redevelopment of the surrounding area is also well underway. Much needed public open space and sports pitches for the nearby school, the Stoke Minster C E A Primary School, are currently being constructed. In addition, public footpaths will be unveiled so visitors can check out the new river for themselves.

Commenting on the completion of the river diversion, Martin Install, Regional Managing Director North, for St. Modwen Homes, said: “As a responsible housebuilder, we want to effect positive change in the places we build our homes and that means taking care of the surrounding area, as well as the variety of wildlife that live there.

“Since funding was granted for the river diversion project, we’ve worked closely with the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, City of Stoke Council and a variety of other partners to ensure the best possible outcomes.

“We’ve demonstrated that developers can work in harmony with the environment, providing future homes for local wildlife, as well as people.

“We’re delighted that the river diversion is now complete and are certain this will bring many benefits to our residents, as well as the wider community, for years to come.”

The river diversion project was made possible by the SUNRISE initiative, which provides funding for the restoration and improvement of natural habitats around Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle.
