Local students win interior design work experience

We have joined forces with Burton and South Derbyshire College to offer BTEC Level 3 Fashion and Textiles students the chance to win work experience with our interior design partner, Edward Thomas Interiors.

Earlier this year, 16 college students, aged between 17 and 21 were tasked to design the interiors of one of our 3 or 4-bed homes from our nearby Branston Leas development.

Taking direction from both Edward Thomas Interiors and St. Modwen Homes, the students created a design for every room of the house – with the main focus being sustainability. Mood boards were established for each room to showcase the chosen colour palettes, fabrics for upholstery, floorcoverings, accessories, and furniture choices.

Each final design counts towards the students’ final grades, and the winner will be selected following a presentation to representatives from Edward Thomas Interiors and St. Modwen Homes.

With work experience up for grabs, the students will need to ensure their designs follow the brief, with a clear direction and purpose, as well as having striking features, a professional outlook and exceptional presentation.

Alison MacLean, Head of Marketing, at St. Modwen Homes, said: “We are so pleased to be involved in such an exciting partnership. Not only do we love seeing different concepts and ideas for our homes, but for one lucky winner this could kick start their career, doing something they are extremely passionate about. We can’t wait to see what the students come up with – something tells me it’s going to be very hard choosing just one winner.”

Andy Richardson, Managing Director, at Edward Thomas Interiors, added: “It’s a pleasure to collaborate with St. Modwen Homes and Burton and South Derbyshire College to provide opportunities for aspiring interior designers. Connecting with nature and the outdoors is a big trend this year; we’re seeing lots of sustainable materials, fabrics and designs which is why we thought this would be the ideal brief for the students. During our briefing session at the College, they asked plenty of insightful questions and I’m confident we’re going to be presented with creative and unique ideas. I’m really looking forward to the judging process!”
